'Nereis.' Collage of handmade, hand-coloured papers with ink detailing on the face and body. Adhered onto Fabriano paper covered in rich ultramarine ink, which has been hand-stitched in silver thread onto a ground that has been covered in hesian. Approx 100 x 70 cm. SOLD. The Figure in Water
This series of paintings and mixed media works was created for a group exhibition exploring the human figure in water. The impetus for the subject was the way that light plays on the body in the sea. It was while I was doing my preliminary researches that I recalled the vibrancy of the coral reefs and tropical fish that I used to see when snorkelling in Africa as a child, and reminded of the delightful weightlessness that we enjoy in water. References to myths and legends associated with rivers and oceans soon followed. The exhibition was held in the Kyklos Galler in Kato Pafos, Cyprus in 2008.
