Abstract Works

Abstract

The words abstract, romantic and Zen have been used to describe my work. They are not terms that would have automatically come to my mind but, when I think about it, there may be some truth there.

The romantic in me moves me to try and relate my experience in a visual way. But a deep sense of inadequacy to fully capture the glory that I am observing drives me in the direction of abstraction which, for me, is the most intense and accurate way of capturing some essence of that experience. You could liken it to the way a poet distils an emotion into a condensed, minimalist yet fully charged expression of that feeling.

If I have succeeded the result may have a Zen quality about it - something that has been hard won in a struggle against the tendency to overstate everything. And it usually entails a long, messy and often confusing process of repeatedly paring down to eliminate unnecessary clutter.
