ART HOLIDAYS ON APHRODITE'S ISLAND
Let magical Cyprus, Aphrodite's Island, seduce and inspire your creative impulse.
Discover for yourself why it is that, since time immemorial, everyone has wanted to possess this place: Assyrians, Anatolians, Phoenicians, Egyptians, Romans, Venetians, Turks and Britons have all been, conquered and left their own legacy. After a peaceful, inspired week of drawing and painting here you can, without disturbing the tranquility, habits or traditions of the place, take home a little part of this paradise with you in your heart, on paper and canvas.
Your non-participating partner is also welcome and will find plenty to do while you are busy: Tsada Golf Course is just five minutes away, sailing and diving can be arranged, there's swimming and walking and photo opportunities galore; bird watching is excellent during migration, then there's the archeology and the geology .....

WHAT THE WEEK OFFERS THE ARTIST IN YOU
Taking Cyprus’ stunning landscape as its inspirational starting point, each week focuses attention on particular aspects of painting and image-making - experimenting with different media, the use of colour, exploring tone, painting from collage, printmaking, abstracting from the landscape, skies and seas.
As drawing is fundamental to good painting, we spend some time each day on drawing exercises, with particular attention on developing the ability to really look and see before translating that experience to a mark on paper.
You will also be encouraged to get into a good sketchbook habit, to develop your own view of the world, establish good practice in preparing your work and explore ways of depicting your own view of the world in your own way.
There will also be time each day for private peace and quiet to enjoy being in this place of tranquil beauty at your own leisure to balance structured group activities.
Depending on the preferences of each group, I can also offer illustrated talks on Cyprus Cultural Heritage and History of Art.
Small groups, consisting of a maximum of eight people.

Tailor-made Art Holidays
In addition to the pre-planned dates listed on this page, I am also able to organise Art Holidays for groups.
If you are a member of an Art Society and can get a group of your members together (minimum four and maximum eight), I can make all the arrangements - accommodation, food, transport, site visits - for you at dates that can be mutually arranged. In addition to the spectacular landscape, here are many aspects of Cyprus that might be of interest to people who have a particular interest - the sea, boats, archaeology, mosaics, churches old and new, ikons, painted churches, cats, geology, golf, deserted villages - to name but a few.
It is better to consider arranging a trip such as this during Spring and Autumn, as these are the seasons when the weather is both reliable and agreeable - late March, April, May, June; September, October, November, early December are good months to plan a visit.

Where is the week located
The week is based in the idyllic village of Kallepia, set in the vine-clad terraced hills behind Pafos, in the west of the island. While you are here you will stay in carefully restored traditional village houses with spectacular views and have the opportunity to savour superb local food and wine. A stunning local landscape will wet your artist’s appetite and forms the basis for work. Trips to some of the island’s outstanding historic sites and little visited beauty spots will further inspire and inform your experience of this exquisite island, as may the occasional illustrated talk on aspects of Cyprus culture.
Stepping into this timeless place, a simpler, rustic life that is closer to nature allows for insight and deeper clarity. The special gift of this place is fresh eyes.

Mary-Lynne writes:
Tom Fairs, my mentor and teacher once said of his own work as an artist that “failure is a failure to concentrate”. This is something that I have found and again to be true in my own work….. the more intense the concentration the more I move away from seeing something with normal, everyday eyes…… this may end up becoming a total focus on the quality of the mark and the experience of making that mark, or the quality of colour and manner of handling the paint that, through the process of concentrating the eye, heart and hand and making them one with the canvas, turns it into a contemplative piece. When I am successful the process becomes a kind of meditation, as it were, that transforms my relationship with the subject of my work – focusing intensively on something produces a completely transformed perception of it, for ever.
